Proactive Business Continuity Management

The proactive phase of a Business Continuity Management programme is a project orientated activity that has a definitive start date, end date, and deliverables within a set budget.

Prevention is often better than a cure and the same can be said of Business Continuity Management. The more proactive work that is carried out the better prepared an organisation will be to react to a disaster. The proactive phase of Business Continuity Management includes:

  • Project Initiation and Management
  • Risk Assessment
  • Business Impact Analysis
  • Business Continuity Management Strategy formulation
  • Plan Production
    • Crisis Management Plan
    • Emergency Management Plan
    • Business Unit Recovery Plans
    • Disaster Site Management Plan
  • Plan Testing
  • Team Exercising
  • Plan Audit
  • Plan Maintenance

Reactive Business Continuity Management

The reactive phase of Business Continuity Management is the implementation of the plan. When the plan is activated a number of activities have to take place to reduce the threat of further damage and to manage the incident. This is where the proactive work and prior planning will pay dividends.

No matter what the nature of the incident, a well thought through plan that is robust and flexible will prove invaluable. The plan provides checklists of actions and a Command and Control structure that can be put into effect in very short timescales.

Feedback Loop

After every incident lessons are learnt and these learning points are fed back into the Business Continuity Management process to improve the plan. Post Incident Reviews are vital to ensure that the plan's currency is maintained.
